# Coinbase BTCUSD point-and-figure analysis

The short-term assessment remains bearish on both sources. High/Low confirmed an October 16 X reversal to $82,500, but that lower top did not generate a buy or replace the October 15 sell at $80,500. Close retains its October 7 sell at $83,000 and now projects a single O extension box at $81,500, a potential sell excluded from confirmed state.

Snapshot: October 17, 2026 at approximately 00:01 UTC, or October 16 at 18:01 Mexico City time, UTC-6. Close was captured at `2026-10-17T00:01:35.904Z`, with a source-reported approximate quote of $81,483.33. High/Low was captured independently at `2026-10-17T00:02:04.604Z`, with a source-reported projection-price value of $81,507.70. The latter matches the current daily high in the candlestick inspection, not a synchronized last-trade quote.

Both charts use COINBASE:BTCUSD, Traditional fixed $500 boxes, 3-box reversal, a 1D source interval, and one-step-back building disabled. Close and High/Low were inspected separately in an isolated public TradingView chart. The interpretation follows Thomas J. Dorsey's *Point and Figure Charting*, 4th edition, Chapters 2, 3, and 11.

## Observations and comparison with the preceding snapshot

The preceding valid snapshot was October 16 at approximately 00:01 UTC. Close retains all 45 confirmed columns beginning February 10, 2026, with no additions, extensions, or revisions when compared by column start dates, directions, and prices. It still ends in the October 12 O column from $83,000 to $82,000, inclusive of 3 boxes. Its last confirmed signal remains the October 7 double-bottom sell at $83,000. The approximate quote changed from $82,117 to $81,483.33.

Close's previously absent projection is now a single O box at $81,500. TradingView assigns it the same index and direction as the latest confirmed O column, so it is a downward extension of that column, not a separate reversal column. The actual projection row contains only this additional box. It must not be expanded into a fabricated full column or included in confirmed history. It projects a support break at $81,500 against the preceding O bottom of $82,000.

High/Low retains all 52 preceding confirmed columns beginning June 26, 2026 and adds the October 16 X column, giving 53 confirmed columns. The new column runs from $80,500 to $82,500, inclusive of 5 boxes. The preceding four-box X projection to $82,000 is therefore confirmed and extended by one box. The new top is lower than the October 14 X top at $84,000, so it generates no buy. There are no extensions or price revisions to the preceding 52 columns. Their numeric indices shifted down by 1 as TradingView changed the loaded history.

High/Low returned no projection. Its completed X reversal leaves the October 15 sell at $80,500 active and its latest confirmed O low at $80,000 unchanged. A missing projection remains null, never synthesized.

Separate 1D candlestick inspections at `2026-10-17T00:00:45.225Z` and `2026-10-17T00:02:32.125Z` returned the same completed October 16 bar: open $82,131.46, high $82,831.01, low $80,693.69, close $81,500.04. Both returned the new October 17 bar. Its initial high was $81,507.70 and low $81,464.86. Historical loading reported completed status 3, and follow-up checks at 00:03:19 UTC for Close and 00:03:45 UTC for High/Low retained the same confirmed right edges. These observations show that the daily rollover had settled.

The completed close at $81,500.04 remained just above Close's $81,500 box threshold, leaving the $82,000 confirmed low intact. High/Low incorporated the completed day's $82,831.01 high into its reversal to the $82,500 box. This source-construction difference is not a contradiction. The October 17 bar is still open. Close's projection was present at capture but absent on the later check, illustrating why it cannot establish confirmed state.

The $500 grid, source settings, confirmed rows, and projection presence were checked against rendered chart screenshots. This snapshot records fresh observations and a confirmed reversal, not a relabeled copy of preceding data.

## Confirmed resistance, support, and signal state

Close has two successive X tops at $86,500. The October 7 O column crossed the preceding $83,500 O low, generating a double-bottom sell at $83,000 and continuing to $82,000. The October 11 X reversal reached only $83,500. The October 12 O column returned to $82,000 without breaking that earlier bottom, so it generated no new sell. The completed October 16 close did not change this structure. The projected $81,500 extension is a potential new sell, not a confirmed one.

High/Low has September and October resistance at $87,000, followed by lower tops at $86,500, $84,000, and now $82,500. Its October 7 O breakdown generated a sell at $84,500 and reached $80,500. The October 12 O column held a higher bottom at $81,000. The October 14 X column matched $84,000 without printing a buy. The October 15 O decline broke that higher bottom at $80,500 and reached $80,000. The new October 16 X reversal remained below the preceding top and did not change the active sell.

[INFERENCE] High/Low's bounce demonstrates an upward column reversal but not sufficient demand to clear even the preceding local top. Its lower top and prior support break retain the bearish interpretation. Close has not confirmed the same support deterioration. Equal tops or bottoms alone do not create a new signal, and column direction is separate from signal direction.

## Decision levels

These are box-printing thresholds for the specified construction, not interchangeable spot-price triggers. An intraday touch or projected box is not a confirmed 1D source-bar result.

| Checkpoint | Close source | High/Low source | Interpretation |
| --- | ---: | ---: | --- |
| Last confirmed sell signal | $83,000, October 7 | $80,500, October 15 | Neither has been replaced by a buy |
| Latest confirmed O low | $82,000 | $80,000 | Reference support in recorded history |
| Latest confirmed X top | $83,500 | $82,500 | Local resistance reference |
| Upward three-box reversal from latest O low | $83,500 | $81,500, already confirmed | A reversal is not a buy |
| Next double-top buy | $84,000 | $84,500 | One box above the preceding X top that the advancing column must exceed |
| Next double-bottom sell | $81,500 | $79,500 | One box below the latest confirmed O low |
| Larger resistance breakout | $87,000 | $87,500 | Clears the September/October ceiling |
| October 7 bearish vertical-count objective | $77,000 | $74,000 | Historical completed first-breakdown count |

Close needs an upward three-box reversal to $83,500 from its confirmed $82,000 O low before a $84,000 buy can occur. Its repeated $82,000 O bottoms would be broken by a confirmed $81,500 box. That box is projected at capture but remains unconfirmed.

High/Low has already confirmed its upward reversal. From the latest $82,500 X top, a three-box downward reversal would require $81,000, without itself being a new sell. Extending the current X column to $83,000 would still be below the preceding October 14 X top at $84,000, so the current buy threshold remains $84,500. Only after an intervening confirmed O reversal would a subsequent X column compare against the newly completed $82,500 top, making $83,000 a potential buy threshold if that top remains unchanged. The next new sell remains $79,500.

## Local trend lines and the shakeout hypothesis

The September local bullish support lines start one box below their named O anchors and rise one $500 box per column. Close uses the September 7 low at $76,000, starting at $75,500. High/Low uses the September 15 low at $75,000, starting at $74,500.

High/Low's October 12 O column printed $81,000 against the reconstructed local bullish guide at $81,500, penetrating it. The October 15 O low of $80,000 remained below its $82,500 guide. At the new October 16 X column, the guide rises to $83,000, still above the entire $80,500 to $82,500 column. The reversal has not reclaimed that local line. Close's guide remains $78,500 at its latest confirmed column, below its $82,000 O low. Its same-column $81,500 projection is also above that guide and does not advance the line by another column.

The optional October bearish resistance lines start at $87,000, one box above the final $86,500 X top before the October 7 sell. Their named anchors are October 4 on Close and October 6 on High/Low. At the latest confirmed columns, these guides stand at $85,500 on Close and $84,000 on High/Low. Both right edges remain below them. High/Low's guide moved down one box with the new column, without a confirmed upward penetration.

[INFERENCE] Neither chart establishes a confirmed bullish shakeout. Dorsey's setup requires a strong underlying and market uptrend, price above bullish support, the first sell in that uptrend, and supportive relative strength. Those conditions have not been established here. High/Low's second sell and continuing local support-line failure weaken the hypothesis despite the confirmed bounce.

These are local guides, not proof that every longer-term bullish support line has failed. Bitcoin spot is not a commodity futures contract. Chapter 11's distinction between trend and signal is analytical context, not a futures-trading instruction.

## Historical downside counts

The named October 7 O breakdown columns are unchanged and completed by subsequent confirmed X reversals. Their bearish vertical counts remain unchanged. Counts include both endpoint boxes and use Dorsey's short-sale multiplier of 2, not 3.

Close: the October 7 column runs from $86,000 to $82,000, giving 9 boxes. $86,000 minus 9 × $500 × 2 gives a $77,000 objective.

High/Low: the October 7 column runs from $86,000 to $80,500, giving 12 boxes. $86,000 minus 12 × $500 × 2 gives a $74,000 objective.

The new confirmed High/Low X reversal completes the October 15 O sequence, unlike the preceding snapshot's unconfirmed projection. That 8-box O column is a later sell in the same decline, not the named first breakdown off the October top used for the displayed Dorsey count. It does not replace the October 7 anchor or justify a new primary objective. Close's one-box projected extension is not a completed count formation.

These historical objectives are not forecasts, guaranteed destinations, or timing estimates. [INFERENCE] The earlier $75,000 to $78,000 trading area remains downside context after High/Low's support break. The bounce does not guarantee recovery, and the count does not guarantee a decline to that area.

Book reference: Chapter 2, printed pp. 57 to 60, objectives and vertical counts, including the short-sale multiplier of 2 and first down move off the top.

## What would change the interpretation

A confirmed local buy at $84,000 on Close or $84,500 on High/Low would replace that source's active sell signal in the current structure. A subsequent pullback holding a higher O bottom, followed by another buy, would provide stronger evidence of sustained demand. A confirmed breakout at $87,000 or $87,500, respectively, would clear the broader resistance ceiling.

A fresh confirmed sell at $81,500 on Close or $79,500 on High/Low would strengthen the bearish case. Close currently projects its sell threshold without confirming it. High/Low has confirmed a reversal without a buy. Neither a projected direction nor a confirmed column direction should be mistaken for a new confirmed signal.

Close retains 45 confirmed columns beginning February 10, 2026. High/Low retains 53 beginning June 26, 2026. Both windows were recaptured from actual loaded TradingView history. All preceding dates, directions, and prices match. High/Low adds one confirmed October 16 X column. Numeric indices are chart identifiers, not evidence of historical revisions or selectors for count and trend anchors. No missing history is interpolated.

TradingView's internal accessors are undocumented and were checked against the rendered chart in this run. Source captures are separate in time. The Close quote and High/Low projection-price value are approximate observations, not synchronized executable prices. October 16 is completed, but October 17's daily input bar is open, so projections can change or disappear. The recorded Close projection is a same-column extension, not a new full O column.

The dashboard's extension boundary was corrected in this refresh: projected same-direction boxes compare with the preceding same-direction confirmed column, not the intervening opposite column. Projected extensions share their confirmed column's horizontal position but have independent inspection identity. Projections remain excluded from active confirmed signals and counts.
